The sponsor serves as a model of and witness to the gospel. Essentially, the sponsor mentors the candidate by supporting, listening, and even challenging the candidate’s faith. The sponsor is to meet monthly with the candidate in the 10th grade year. The sponsor presents you to the Diocesan Bishop and stands with you during the anointing with oil. S/he acts on behalf of the Church in sponsoring you and welcoming you to full membership. S/he also promises you support and help in the future. During your life, your sponsor should be available for this encouragement.
Your sponsor must be mature in practicing the Roman Catholic faith and be at least 16 years of age. The sponsor must be fully initiated, having received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist and participates in the Eucharist weekly. The sponsor must be a faith-filled, Catholic relative or friend. It is desirable that the godparent at Baptism be sponsor at Confirmation, if a faith relationship exists. According to the Directives of Canon 874, No. 5, neither the father nor the mother of the candidate can be a sponsor.
